Jim is a founding member of the firm and heads up the firms transactional practice which encompasses all aspects of real estate and corporate matters. Jim is nationally recognized for his assistance to clients in legal matters regarding resorts, clubs, planned communities, country clubs, private residence clubs, fractional and timeshare resorts, destination clubs, condominiums, townhome developments and commercial real estate transactions. In providing this assistance, Jim works with developers, marketers, lenders, managers, consultants, brokers, regulators and property owner associations.
While Jim is active in representing public companies involved in the areas of his practice, Jim is equally known for undertaking the representation of the entrepreneur, many times working with those who have the objective to bring a new and innovative idea to the market place. His clients have included those who have formed and operate the first multi location timeshare club registered in the State of Florida , Bluegreen Corporation, to the first Destination Clubs, such as Exclusive Resorts and Ultimate Resorts as well as those who originated the first points based timeshare exchange company in the world, Resort Condominiums International (RCI). As well, Jim has been involved in some of the largest resort transactions as have occurred to date, including, for example, the Fortress Investment buy out of Intrawest Corporation for over 2.5 billion dollars and the Ultimate Resorts acquisition of Tanner and Haley and their subsequent merger with Private Escapes. While these involvements are ones for which Jim is sought out, he regularly provides, as well, assistance to start up operations within his practice areas throughout the United States, having assisted clients with real estate resort and planned development communities in many states. His representation of these clients is the full menu, assisting with sponsor formation, acquisitions, financing, document development, registrations, marketing and sales and licensing.
Jim received his J.D degree from St John’s University School of Law in New York in 1976 where he was a member and on the editorial board of the St John’s University Law Review. Jim’s undergraduate degree is from the State University of New York. Jim is a former national trustee of the Community Associations Institute, is a Charter Member of the Academy of Hospitality Industry Attorneys, a trustee of the American Resort Developers Association and a routine speaker at many CLE and trade industry seminars, including the Ragatz Fractional And Private Residence Club seminar. He is admitted to practice in Georgia and California.
